What is collected

This is a static website. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics, embeds no third-party trackers, and has no login or comments.

The contact form is the one exception. When you submit it, the name, email address, subject and message you entered are sent to my mailbox, along with your IP address and country, which are recorded to make abuse of the form traceable. Delivery is handled by Resend (Plus Five Five, Inc.) acting as a processor. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR where your message concerns a possible working relationship, and otherwise Art. 6(1)(f), my legitimate interest in answering enquiries. Messages stay in my mailbox for as long as the correspondence is useful.

The site is served by Cloudflare, Inc., which processes technical data, including your IP address, the requested URL, the time of the request and your browser's user agent, for the purpose of delivering the page and protecting the service against abuse. This is necessary to operate the site (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, legitimate interest in secure and functional delivery). Cloudflare acts as a processor under a data processing agreement; transfers outside the EU are covered by the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.

The Map of Astrophysics

The map shows researchers by name, together with the number of their astrophysics papers, the number of citations those papers have received, the years they span, their closest co-authors, and links to their public OpenAlex and ORCID records. All of it is derived from the published scholarly record as catalogued by OpenAlex (OurResearch), which releases it under CC0. No other personal data is involved; the map has no accounts and sets no cookies. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, a legitimate interest in presenting and analysing the public structure of a scientific field, which the authors themselves put into the public domain by publishing.

Anyone shown can object at any time by pressing Remove me on their star, which anonymizes it: the name, numbers and links are removed while an unlabelled point stays in the layout. That request stores the OpenAlex identifier concerned, a salted hash of the requesting IP address (kept for one day to limit abuse), the country, and the time; I also receive it by email, delivered by Resend as above. Requests take effect within about ten minutes and are carried into every later build. To have the point removed altogether, or to correct a record, write to me.

Fonts and assets

All fonts, images and scripts are served from this domain. Nothing is fetched from Google Fonts or any other third-party CDN, so no data is sent to other providers when you load a page.

If you write to me directly rather than through the form, your message and address are stored in my mailbox for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry.

Your rights

You have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and to object to processing. You may also lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. In Brandenburg that is the Landesbeauftragte für den Datenschutz und für das Recht auf Akteneinsicht.
